I answer a lot of phone calls every day. One item I receive a lot of questions about is extension poles. So let’s take a moment to answer some of the most frequently asked questions.

    Why use an extension pole?

An extension pole is going to be a safer option than climbing or using a ladder or step stool. Any time your feet are flat on the floor, instead of balanced high in the air, you are cleaning in a safer manner.

An extension pole also saves times, since you are not climbing up and down and moving a ladder.

There are also situations where a ladder may not be an option – for example, working over a garden.

What is the right length extension pole?

This is a more elaborate question, and requires some further information to be gathered. In general, two important things you can keep in mind when choosing a pole are the following:

    1. You can assume 4-5 feet before even considering the length of the pole, because of the height of the person using it.
    2. 1-story is 10 feet, without considering vaulted ceiling.

So if you are working with a simple 1-story home, you only need about 6 feet of pole to accomplish your cleaning goals. A 2-story home would be closer to a 15 foot pole.

Do I have to use special tools when using an extension pole?

No, an extension pole can be used with a standard, solid handle washer and squeegee.

However, it can be easier for some people to maneuver the washer and squeegee when working higher above your head with a swivel handle. This way you can snake the pole without lifting the squeegee from the window. With the right technique, this can save a great deal of time, especially on larger windows.
