Does anyone still use written service agreements, or just verbal?

The few accounts I have picked up recently were verbal. Should I have service agreements? I feel like having something written down could scare them away like its a contract.

It does scare them away. For most accounts, we just use the acceptance of the proposal as our grounds for the agreement.

Aside from corporate accounts, it really only becomes a problem when you have a lot of accounts, especially if you have late-payers. When someone owes you money, than all of a sudden they care about a contract. Restaurants and retail have a fairly high turn-over, and when a new manager is hired and you're calling to ask for money it can be difficult.
