Advice on cold calling?

    What do you guys thinking about cold calling? Is it a positive aspect for a business or a downfall? This is mainly towards the sales people, as I'm not sure what do make of it. How many leads should a salesperson make a day working 'x' amount of hours a day? What percent per job do you pay your sales people? Cold calling to me is all a hit or miss, as your just playing numbers instead of having a solid business system to gather and network clients but figured what's it going to hurt in the long run? I know there are other things involved such as needing to develop a training and lead generation system to support these cold calls, but what would be the best and smartest way to go about this situation?
