What are the standard procedures for erasing the data on a customer's old phone after transferring it to a new phone at a tech store?

I am concerned about the privacy and security of my personal data on my old phone, which I gave to the store clerk after buying a new phone. I did not delete any of my texts or photos before handing over the old phone, and I wonder if the clerk or anyone else could access them. I assume that the store staff are professional and ethical, but I would feel more comfortable if I knew that they erased the data on my old phone as soon as they completed the transfer. Is this a common practice or does it vary by store?
